recycling of thermosetting

The first results of the project coordinated by Certech on the recycling of thermosetting composites (RECY-COMPOSITE) were presented on February 22 to industry delegates.
In Europe, the production of consumer-grade composites is estimated at 2.8 million tonnes, 20% of plastic and composite waste being still landfilled. In order to address this challenge different technical options are considered: material recycling, thermochemical recycling (pyrolysis, solvolysis) and energy recovery (only when recycling is not possible).
The teams are evaluating the feasibility of recycling thermoset composite production waste and end-of-life thermosetting or thermoplastic composites.
Certech is investigating, among other options, innovative processes such as solvolysis (chemical recycling) to recycle high quality fibres.
